Rehearsal Ahead of Crewed Lunar Return
The US space agency has adopted a phased approach to reduce the risk of the first crewed Moon landing since the Apollo era. Under this plan, a demonstration flight labeled Artemis III is scheduled for 2027 to clear the path for the actual surface landing set for 2028.
During that effort, ground controllers and astronauts in orbit will practice rendezvous and docking between the Orion spacecraft and commercially built human landing systems. The exercise is meant to validate procedures before any crew is committed to a lunar voyage.
Additional Uncrewed Lunar Trials
Beyond the orbital demonstration, further robotic test missions near the Moon are planned. Telemetry and operational experience from those flights will support preparation for the crewed Artemis III touchdown.
