On September 4, 1962, the Mariner 2 spacecraft carried out the first-ever rocket maneuver in deep space. The maneuver took place roughly halfway between Earth and Venus and was intended to correct small trajectory errors that had accumulated after launch.
Technical Execution
The correction was performed using the probe’s small reaction‑control thrusters. It lasted about ten seconds and changed the velocity by a few metres per second. Commands were sent from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory via the Deep Space Network.
Without this adjustment, Mariner 2 would have missed Venus or flown past it at an unsuitable distance. The maneuver ensured the spacecraft could encounter the planet at the planned distance for scientific observations.
