The First Lunar Airport
Over the coming twenty years the Moon may acquire its first airport, serving as a transfer point for both human and robotic missions. NASA’s Gateway is intended to be a lunar orbiting outpost that functions as the world’s first true spaceport.
The Gateway will provide a stable platform near the Moon from which Orion capsules, lunar landers and cargo vehicles can launch and land. It will act as a staging post for astronauts and a depot for propellant and equipment needed for farther destinations.
Alongside the Orion capsules that carry crews from Earth to the Gateway, various lander systems are slated to reach the lunar surface. Cargo ships will deliver supplies, scientific gear and food while astronauts move between the Gateway, the Moon’s surface and eventually deeper destinations in the solar system.
Experts view this as a key step toward a sustained human presence beyond Earth. A lunar airport could streamline logistics for future Mars missions and other celestial targets, laying the groundwork for an expanding space economy.
