A collaborative effort between NASA and international partners is nearing its launch window. On June 30, a dedicated service vehicle will raise the orbit of the Swift observatory, securing its continued scientific operations.
Purpose of the Orbit Raise
Elevating the satellite’s altitude will prolong its mission life and lessen atmospheric drag, allowing uninterrupted monitoring of gamma‑ray bursts, X‑ray sources, and optical afterglows.
Participating Organizations
The mission is led by NASA together with the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, the Goddard Space Flight Center, and several European collaborators. A commercial launch provider will supply the service vehicle that performs the boost.
Technical Sequence
After launch, the service vehicle will insert into a low Earth orbit and rendezvous with Swift. Following a docking maneuver, a controlled thrust will lift the telescope’s orbit to roughly 600 km. The entire procedure is expected to last only a few hours.
Future Outlook
Upon successful completion, Swift will resume its observations of transient astrophysical events. The boost also serves as a prototype for future on‑orbit servicing of low‑Earth‑orbit satellites.
