Overview
NASA is working with SpaceX to install Starlink laser communication terminals on the Orion spacecraft for the upcoming Artemis III mission. The system is intended to transmit 4K video and substantial data volumes from the lunar surface back to Earth.
Technical details
The laser terminals will create an optical link between Orion and ground stations, bypassing traditional radio frequencies. This approach allows far higher data rates, which are necessary for streaming ultra‑high‑definition video and sending scientific payloads in real time.
Mission benefits
With the laser link, astronauts can downlink near‑live imagery and experiment results to mission control. This enhances public outreach and provides operators with timely information for decision‑making during the lunar stay.
Outlook
Ground‑based testing of the laser communication hardware is already underway. If the demonstrations meet performance goals, the technology could become a standard feature on future Artemis flights, greatly expanding the data‑return capability for deep‑space exploration.
