Artemis 3 crew selection
The United States space agency announced the four-member crew that will launch on the Artemis‑3 mission next year. The team combines seasoned pilots and scientists who have previously served on long‑duration International Space Station expeditions.
Purpose of the test flight
The primary objective is to demonstrate the docking technology required for the lunar lander module. During the mission, an autonomous docking maneuver will be performed between the Orion spacecraft and a newly developed lunar‑lander prototype in low Earth orbit.
Preparing for the 2028 Moon landing
Successfully completing this test represents a pivotal milestone in the Artemis program, which targets a crewed lunar landing by 2028. The data gathered will enhance safety and efficiency for subsequent Moon missions and support the goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the lunar surface.
Next steps
Following the docking demonstration, additional flights will further evaluate the lander in Earth orbit. NASA intends to apply the validated procedures during Artemis‑4, which aims to deliver the first astronauts to the Moon’s surface.
