NASA‑funded monitoring network delivers detailed soot data over Addis Ababa
A NASA‑funded air‑pollution monitoring network has produced one of the most detailed long‑term views yet of black carbon, or soot, in Addis Ababa. The network consists of several stations that continuously record particulate concentrations, allowing researchers to quantify contributions from various combustion sources.
Black carbon forms when fossil fuels, biomass or other hydrocarbons burn incompletely. In Ethiopia’s capital the main sources identified so far are diesel‑powered traffic, household cooking and heating fires, and occasional biomass burning in the surrounding areas.
The measurements reveal clear diurnal patterns: morning and evening peaks correlate with heightened traffic activity, while afternoon values tend to be lower. Seasonal trends also appear, with higher concentrations during the dry season when atmospheric dispersion is weaker.
These insights help city planners and public‑health officials design targeted air‑quality interventions. They also improve knowledge of soot’s climate impact, which affects both local health and the global radiation balance.
