Delivery of the NavCube3-mini
On July 13, NASA’s team transferred the NavCube3-mini navigation payload to Intuitive Machines, where it will be integrated into the Altus-1 satellite, the company’s inaugural lunar relay spacecraft.
The NavCube3-mini is roughly half the size of a shoebox and weighs about 3.5 pounds. Despite its compact form, the unit delivers high‑performance computing for accurate positioning and timing in the lunar environment.
Altus-1 is intended to support the Artemis program’s goal of a sustained human presence on the Moon. The satellite will act as a communications and navigation bridge between the lunar surface, astronauts, rovers, and ground stations on Earth.
The successful handover marks a key milestone in building a reliable lunar infrastructure. Further testing and final integration of the payload are planned before the launch campaign begins.
Intuitive Machines envisions deploying Altus-1 as part of a constellation of relay satellites that will provide continuous coverage of the lunar poles and equatorial regions. In addition to navigation, the network aims to boost data rates for scientific experiments and enable real‑time video transmission.
The NavCube3-mini builds on the proven NavCube architecture previously used in low‑Earth orbit. Miniaturized components and radiation‑hardened parts make the unit suitable for the harsh conditions of space.
