Intensive preparation for Artemis II
Ahead of the first crewed lunar flyby in more than fifty years, NASA devised a dedicated training program. The Artemis II crew – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen – devoted two years to mastering geological observation skills.
Earth‑based fieldwork
The astronauts practiced in diverse terrestrial settings, such as the impact structures of Labrador and volcanic ash deposits in Iceland. They learned to identify rock types, interpret color variations, and reconstruct the history of surface processes.
Applying skills to the Moon
The goal is to enable the crew to do more than pilot a spacecraft; they are expected to make scientific assessments of the lunar terrain, describing colors, shadows and geological formations to infer the Moon’s evolution.
Implications for future missions
This approach signals a shift in astronaut responsibilities on lunar missions. Rather than focusing solely on technical operations, crew members are being equipped with a stronger scientific role that will benefit upcoming landings.
