Overview of the Eclipse
On August 12, 2024, a total solar eclipse cast its shadow over Greenland, Iceland and Spain. Observers located within the path of totality, provided skies were clear, were able to glimpse the Sun’s faint outer atmosphere, the corona, for a brief period.
During totality, the Moon blocked the bright solar disk, allowing the corona’s pearlescent glow to become visible. This rare view offers scientists a chance to examine the corona’s temperature, density and magnetic structure, which are otherwise obscured by the Sun’s intense surface light.
NASA deployed teams on the ground, operated high‑altitude aircraft to fly above cloud layers, and utilized space‑based instruments to capture the eclipse from multiple vantage points. The resulting imagery combines perspectives from Earth’s surface, the stratosphere and orbit, providing a detailed picture of the corona’s extent and variability.
These observations are now being processed for scientific study. Insights gained will help refine models of solar wind generation and coronal heating, ultimately improving forecasts of space weather that can affect satellites, power grids and astronaut safety.
