Overview
From June 3 to June 13, aircraft operating out of Ellington Field in Houston provided students with direct exposure to the techniques scientists use to study Earth from the sky. The activity was organized under NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP), which annually offers practical training in airborne science.
Program Objectives
SARP targets undergraduate and graduate students from a range of disciplines, teaching them how airborne field campaigns gather data for atmospheric science, ecology, air‑quality research, and climate modeling. Participants were introduced to flight planning, instrument deployment, and data analysis.
Flight Operations
During the ten‑day period, several missions were flown with research aircraft equipped with sensors measuring temperature, humidity, aerosol concentrations, and trace gases. Data were streamed to ground stations in real time and subsequently processed by the students.
Outcomes and Future Plans
Students reported that observing measurements firsthand deepened their understanding of atmospheric complexity and climate processes. The program also facilitated networking with researchers and engineers, potentially leading to future collaborations. NASA plans to continue the initiative next year to further develop the next generation of atmospheric scientists.
