Additional data on the interstellar visitor
The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile has obtained further measurements of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. Spectroscopic observations reveal a chemical signature consistent with earlier results from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
Matching chemical signatures
Both facilities detected traces of hydrocarbons and silicates, indicating an ice‑rich composition that likely formed in the outer regions of another star system. The agreement between the spectra reinforces the hypothesis that 3I/ATLAS originates from a similar reservoir as previous interstellar objects.
Implications for interstellar comet formation
The new data support models in which such comets are ejected during planet formation in distant systems and later traverse interstellar space. The observations suggest that 3I/ATLAS's makeup is not unusual, but rather exhibits typical features of protoplanetary disks.
Ongoing observation campaign
The VLT will continue high‑resolution monitoring over the next weeks to track possible variations in gas emissions. Simultaneously, JWST plans observations in additional wavelength bands to assemble a comprehensive picture of the comet's physical properties.
