A team from the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris analyzed imagery from NASA’s Dawn mission to investigate surface processes on the asteroid Vesta. They applied a Bayesian inversion of the Hapke photometric model to derive the reflectance characteristics of various deposits.
Findings on avalanches and ejecta
The results indicate that the brightest areas correspond to the freshest avalanche and ejecta deposits, providing a clear marker for recently mobilized regolith.
Implications for regolith research
This correlation between brightness and mobilization age offers a novel approach to track the evolutionary history of regolith on airless bodies, potentially extendable to other asteroids or the Moon.
