Halley’s Comet has long fascinated astronomers and the public alike. During its 1986 appearance, only a handful of spacecraft could make brief flybys, leaving scientists craving a longer encounter.
Proposal from Abu Dhabi
A group of researchers at Khalifa University, together with international co‑authors, has released a concept paper on the arXiv preprint server. The proposal outlines a trajectory that would enable a spacecraft to rendezvous with the comet in 2061.
Unlike the fleeting visits of the 1980s “Halley Armada,” the new concept aims for an extended stay, allowing detailed measurements of the comet’s composition, activity and tail.
The authors stress that success depends on precise orbit determination and available propulsion technology, but their calculations indicate that a 2061 rendezvous is feasible.
