Resuming operations after hibernation
After an almost twelve‑month dormant period, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has successfully powered up its instruments. The probe, which flew past Pluto in 2015, is currently situated roughly 9.6 billion miles (about 15.5 billion kilometres) from Earth, well beyond the dwarf planet’s orbit.
Health status and mission goals
Telemetry indicates that the primary subsystems—propulsion, communications, power, and scientific payload—are functioning within normal parameters. Mission planners aim to employ the spacecraft for additional observations of Kuiper Belt objects and to study the heliospheric environment at extreme distances.
Next steps
Over the next weeks New Horizons will transmit data back to Earth while the team evaluates potential new targets. The probe may also serve as a testbed for next‑generation deep‑space communication technologies.
