New hardware at the Subaru site
During the summer season, the Subaru Telescope will receive a newly developed spectrographic unit named NINJA for an initial series of engineering observations on the sky. The campaign is intended to verify the instrument's performance under operational conditions at the observatory.
Designed as a near-infrared spectrograph, NINJA targets observations that must be carried out within tight time windows. Its primary scientific motivation lies in studying short-lived astronomical occurrences, including the light emitted alongside gravitational-wave events detected by terrestrial observatories.
Designed for rapid response
The apparatus was built to enable measurements shortly after a transient phenomenon appears, a requirement that standard instrumentation often cannot meet. By focusing on fast-changing sources, the project supports research into processes that vanish from view within hours or days.
