NRO Expands Use of HawkEye 360 Satellite Intelligence
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) announced an expansion of its existing contract with HawkEye 360. The revised agreement grants the U.S. government broader access to the satellite‑derived data collected by the company.
HawkEye 360’s data specialize in detecting and geolocating electronic emitters such as radar installations, vessels and other radio‑frequency sources. The information is gathered by a constellation of small satellites that monitor RF emissions and determine their origin.
By increasing access, the NRO aims to enhance the capability to identify and track electromagnetic signals in near‑real time. This supports activities including maritime domain awareness, air‑traffic monitoring and the protection of critical infrastructure.
The contract growth highlights the rising reliance on commercially sourced satellite data for national security missions. Both parties emphasize that the arrangement operates within applicable legal and regulatory frameworks.
