Looking Back at the Crater Edge
On May 15, 2025, the Perseverance Mars rover aimed its Mastcam-Z camera at the outer edge of Jezero Crater, producing a broad landscape image. The frame was acquired on sol 1,505 of the mission and shows the approximately 150-meter-tall crater wall from the vehicle's vantage point.
The photograph looks upward toward the exterior lip of the impact basin. The crater rim rises about 490 feet, or 150 meters, above the surrounding terrain and forms a distinct topographic boundary in the area.
Notable Rock Exposures on the Slope
Bright-toned rock units appear exposed across the slope, extending from the middle left to the middle right of the scene. These uncovered layers provide information on the geological makeup of the crater rim and were documented by the rover's Mastcam-Z assembly.
