Geological record on the crater rim
NASA's Perseverance rover has examined a layered sequence of rock roughly 245 feet thick along the edge of Jezero Crater. According to the mission's science team, the structure was most likely created by a series of asteroid impacts during the planet's distant past.
The exposed bedrock interval has been named the "Broom Point member" by researchers. Estimated to be older than 3.9 billion years, it ranks among the most ancient terrains ever studied by a robotic vehicle on the Martian surface.

The finding contributes to understanding the environmental and geological conditions that shaped Mars more than three billion years ago. Because impact events across the solar system can often be correlated chronologically, the layered deposits may serve as a local timeline for early Martian history.
