Plans for the First Starship Catch
Elon Musk recently said that SpaceX is likely to attempt the first-ever capture of the Starship upper stage using the launch tower’s arms within the next few months. Such a maneuver has never been performed before.
The tower‑catch concept involves catching the returning stage after re‑entry with the large mechanical arms mounted on the launch mount. This approach could eliminate the need for landing legs or a dedicated landing pad, thereby increasing reusability.
Achieving a successful catch demands extremely precise guidance, navigation and control systems because the stage approaches the tower at high speed and a steep angle. SpaceX has already practiced similar maneuvers with the Super Heavy booster, but the upper stage presents additional challenges due to its lighter mass and different aerodynamic profile.
If the demonstration succeeds, it could shorten turnaround times and enable a higher flight rate. The company intends to carry out the initial attempts at its Boca Chica test site in Texas, although an exact date has not yet been announced.
