New Contractor for NASA Mars Mission
NASA has selected a private company headquartered in California to handle the full development, manufacturing and launch of its next Mars orbiter, scheduled for a 2028 launch.
Scope of Work
The contractor will be responsible for the spacecraft’s design, the production of all hardware, system integration and the launch operation, delivering a fully operational probe to orbit Mars.
Mission Objectives
Operating under the Aeolus program, the orbiter will become the first instrument to deliver daily, planet‑wide measurements of the Martian environment, covering atmospheric dynamics, dust activity and long‑term climate trends.
Scientific Impact
Continuous global data will enable researchers to refine climate models, improve understanding of Martian weather patterns and assess how the planet’s climate has evolved over time. The mission will complement existing orbiters and landers that provide intermittent or seasonal observations.
Future Implications
Successful execution could reinforce the role of commercial partners in deep‑space exploration and pave the way for further collaborations between NASA and the private sector.
