A private spacecraft was assigned to raise the orbit of NASA's Swift Observatory.
The mission has failed, according to officials.
As a result, the Swift telescope will no longer be able to maintain its orbit and will re-enter the atmosphere later this year.
Consequently, the telescope will make an uncontrolled re-entry and fall back to Earth later this year.
