Tracking a Planetary Encounter
From May 2 to May 15, 2026, NASA's Psyche spacecraft employed the planet Mars for a gravitational assist. During this interval the probe closed its distance to the Red Planet, and from its vantage point Mars was rendered not as a full disk but as a crescent that expanded over time.
A composite of images recorded across those two weeks illustrates the shifting visible phase. At the start of the sequence, Mars stood farthest from the vehicle, so the crescent appeared smallest and was centered in the frame. As the approach continued, the lit crescent portion increased progressively.
Role of the Gravity Assist
The flyby was designed to alter Psyche's trajectory and speed using Martian gravity without expending onboard propellant. Such maneuvers are a standard technique to reduce energy demands on missions bound for distant destinations. The collected imagery simultaneously provides a visual record of the approach geometry.
