Detection in Radio Waves
Researchers operating the U.S. National Science Foundation Very Large Array (NSF VLA) recorded an exceptional flare of radio emission. The signal originated from an uncommon cosmic occurrence in which a black hole of intermediate mass disrupted and shredded a passing star.
Analysis of the measurements indicates that the observed glow represents the off-axis afterglow of a powerful relativistic jet. Such jets form when material near a black hole is ejected at speeds close to that of light, producing strong electromagnetic radiation.
Relevance for Astrophysics
Intermediate-mass black holes are viewed as a theoretical bridge between stellar and supermassive varieties, yet confirmed detections remain scarce. The newly seen radio flare may provide evidence for the long-sought missing link in the evolutionary chain of these objects.
