Early Black Holes in Focus
How the massive black holes residing at the hearts of galaxies came into being and increased in size remains a key puzzle in modern astrophysics. Addressing this requires observations of extremely remote objects that were already present when the cosmos was far younger than today.
According to a recent investigation, NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope should be capable of identifying such ancient supermassive black holes at large distances. The research indicates that the mission could record instances in which these objects destroy passing stars through intense tidal forces, known as tidal disruption events.
Timeframe and Launch
The black holes examined in the study existed up to roughly 11 billion years ago. The telescope is currently scheduled to lift off on 30 August 2026. The resulting measurements would help scientists trace how central black holes grew across immense spans of cosmic history.
