New satellite constellation for the Canary Islands
A compact satellite constellation designed to monitor regional hazards such as wildfires and volcanic eruptions is set to operate over the Canary Islands. The imaging hardware will be supplied by Belgium‑based Simera Sense.
Technical capabilities
Simera Sense will provide multispectral imagers capable of capturing data across several wavelength bands. This allows precise detection of thermal anomalies that may indicate emerging fires or volcanic activity.
Objectives and benefits
The constellation aims to deliver early warnings to local authorities, reducing response times during emergencies. Collected data will also support long‑term environmental monitoring and disaster‑risk planning.
Project partners and location
The contract forms part of an initiative launched by the Canary Islands government to strengthen resilience against natural threats. The archipelago lies off the coast of Spain and is situated in a geologically active zone.
Future outlook
Launch of the satellites is scheduled for next year. Once operational, the system will transmit data in near‑real‑time to emergency coordination centers, facilitating rapid decision‑making.
