Commands delayed by eight minutes
Specialists have renewed the operating software of a space probe that is currently roughly 140 million kilometres from Earth. Because every instruction sent to the vehicle suffers a latency of about eight minutes, the procedure demanded careful planning and patience from the control team.
Following the installation of the updated code, the engineers executed two complete system reboots. Owing to the signal travel time, the outcome of each command could only be confirmed eight minutes after transmission, adding tension to an already delicate operation.
Scientific purpose of the upgrade
A successful update enables the spacecraft to study an asteroid at close range, a body whose condition has been permanently changed by human intervention since 2022. Detailed imagery from the probe is expected to resolve uncertainties that have remained open for years.
- Probe distance: approximately 140 million kilometres
- Command delay: about eight minutes each way
- Reboots performed: two full cycles
- Target: an asteroid modified by humans
Since 2022, it has been unknown exactly what consequences the human activity had on the celestial object. The improved software is intended to give the spacecraft the capability to gather the evidence needed to answer that question.
