Launch from Vandenberg
On June 6, 2024, SpaceX ignited its Falcon 9 from pad 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base at 9:24 p.m. Pacific time (2:24 a.m. EDT / 04:24 UTC on June 7). The launch was part of a standard Starlink mission, but also carried two government‑grade Starshield satellites.
Starshield – the government variant of Starlink
Starshield refers to the U.S. Department of Defense‑backed version of the Starlink constellation. While commercial Starlink satellites focus on delivering broadband internet to private users, Starshield payloads are intended for secure communications, reconnaissance and other defense‑related tasks.
Flight details
The Falcon 9 lifted a total of 46 satellites – 44 regular Starlink units and the two Starshield spacecraft. After reaching the intended orbit, the payloads were deployed, with the Starshield satellites placed in a slightly higher inclination to meet their specific operational requirements.
Implications for future launches
Announcements of Starshield deployments are uncommon, as most defense‑related launches are kept confidential. This flight, however, provides valuable insight into integrating military payloads with commercial rideshares and may signal an increase in such combined missions.
