Last month SpaceX conducted a high‑altitude test flight of its Starship vehicle, which ended with a planned splashdown in the ocean after the vehicle completed its ascent and re‑entry maneuvers.
Following the splashdown, recovery teams deployed specialized vessels to locate the spacecraft and began towing it across a rough segment of the Indian Ocean where weather conditions had produced strong currents and high waves.
After several days of navigating the turbulent waters, the convoy reached the more sheltered area off Christmas Island, where the sea state calmed and the vehicle could be secured for further inspection.
The successful retrieval marks another step in SpaceX’s iterative test program, providing engineers with valuable data on the vehicle’s structural integrity and systems performance after a full flight profile.
