Unexpected Brightness in Dying Stars
Remnants of supernova explosions are expected to cool gradually over thousands of years, emitting only faint radiation. However, observations with NASA's Chandra X‑ray Observatory have revealed that many of these remnants in a nearby galaxy suddenly brighten dramatically in X‑rays.
Evidence of a Surviving Companion
The findings indicate that in each system a star survived the partner's supernova. The leftover compact object—a black hole or neutron star—now accretes material from the surviving star, producing the observed X‑ray flares.
A Dynamic View of Stellar Graveyards
This discovery challenges the traditional view of stellar graveyards as quiet, slowly fading sites. Instead, in certain cases a vigorous energy exchange between the remnant and a compact object re‑ignites X‑ray emission.
Future Observations Planned
Researchers intend to conduct deeper observations to assess how common this phenomenon is and to clarify the underlying physics. The results may provide new insights into post‑supernova interactions within binary systems.
