A rare celestial event
On August 12, a narrow corridor across northern Spain will experience a total solar eclipse. The Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun, covering it completely and turning day into night for a few minutes.

The track of totality runs from the Atlantic coast through the Basque Country to Catalonia. Observers within this band will see the Sun vanish for roughly two minutes, while surrounding areas will witness only a partial shading.
Viewing safety
Proper solar filters or eclipse glasses are mandatory for the partial phases, as looking at the Sun with the naked eye can cause permanent eye damage. During the brief total phase, the Sun’s corona becomes visible and can be observed safely without filters.
Scientific relevance
Total eclipses provide a unique window for solar scientists to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona, which is normally hidden by the bright solar disk. Measurements of temperature, magnetic fields and particle flows are possible during the darkness.
Local preparations
Several Spanish towns are organizing public viewing sites, lectures and educational activities. Travelers are advised to secure accommodation early, as demand in the affected regions typically spikes ahead of the event.
