A collaboration of German and Turkish astronomers has re‑examined archival data from several space‑based observatories to characterize the ultraluminous X‑ray source designated X‑4, located in the nearby galaxy NGC 4631, often referred to as the Whale galaxy.
Methodology
The study combines observations across the soft and hard X‑ray bands, applying spectral fitting techniques and timing analysis to detect changes in flux and energy distribution. Data from multiple missions were cross‑matched to improve statistical significance.
Findings
Published as a preprint on arXiv on 22 June, the results reveal pronounced spectral variability indicative of shifting accretion states. Both periodic and aperiodic timing signatures were identified, suggesting complex dynamics in the inflowing material surrounding the compact object.
Implications
These observations add to the growing body of evidence that ultraluminous X‑ray sources may represent an intermediate class between stellar‑mass black holes and supermassive black holes, or possibly highly magnetized neutron stars with extreme accretion rates.
Future work
Planned high‑resolution observations with upcoming facilities such as XRISM are expected to refine the current picture and help determine the exact nature of X‑4.
