Proposal for Retractable, Pressurized Tunnels on Mars
As part of NASA's Moon to Mars eXploration Systems and Habitation (M2M X‑Hab) 2026 Academic Innovation Challenge, a team from the University of Michigan presented a concept for actuated, pressurized tunnels that would link the astronaut habitat with other surface elements such as laboratories, storage units, or rovers.
The tunnels would incorporate actuators allowing them to be extended and retracted as needed while maintaining a constant internal pressure. This would enable astronauts to move between modules without wearing suits, reducing preparation time and the effort required for suit donning and doffing.

The Michigan team intends to build a small‑scale prototype to demonstrate actuator performance and seal integrity across temperature variations. Successful testing could inform future Mars habitat designs that incorporate similar tunnel systems.
