The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has boosted its existing contract with Blue Origin by $11.7 million. The additional funding will support further research into using space rockets for rapid point‑to‑point cargo transport on Earth.
Blue Origin is exploring concepts where reusable launch stages could carry freight between continents, aiming to cut delivery times from days to hours.
The expanded budget enables more detailed studies of fuel efficiency, launch and landing procedures, and integration with current aviation infrastructure.
Officials stress that the work remains in an early research phase and no operational system is imminent. Nevertheless, the military sees potential logistical advantages for crisis or humanitarian missions.
