First Mission by Reflect Orbital Authorized
The United States Federal Communications Commission has granted permission for the initial test launch of a spacecraft named Eärendil-1. The operator, Reflect Orbital, intends to use the mission to demonstrate the technical feasibility of directing sunlight back toward the ground on request.
Once deployed, the onboard reflector is designed to span a surface of 18 by 18 meters. According to the company, this would allow sunlight to be cast on chosen areas of the planet to provide illumination during night or dark seasons.
Long-Term Vision Envisions Massive Fleet
Reflect Orbital foresees the establishment of a system comprising more than 50,000 reflectors in low Earth orbit. The year 2035 is cited as the target for this constellation, which would encircle the globe and deliver light on demand.
