Launch of the upgraded Ariane 6
On 17 June, the European Ariane 6 rocket lifted off from the Guiana Space Centre carrying a payload of Amazon’s low‑Earth‑orbit satellites. The vehicle was fitted with newly upgraded solid rocket boosters that provide higher thrust and improved efficiency compared with the baseline configuration.
Mission payload
The mission delivered thirty‑six Leo satellites, each weighing roughly 260 kg, into an orbit approximately 540 km above Earth. The satellites are intended to expand Amazon’s global broadband network and represent the first operational use of the upgraded boosters.
ESA considers higher launch frequency
The European Space Agency is using the successful flight to explore options for increasing the Ariane 6 launch rate. A higher cadence would enhance the launcher’s competitiveness and improve its cost‑effectiveness.
Future outlook
Following the launch, Ariane 6 is slated for additional commercial missions, including telecommunications and Earth‑observation payloads. ESA will analyse the performance data to refine future launch schedules and booster designs.
