New exoplanet discovery
An international consortium of astronomers, working within the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS), has reported the detection of a previously unknown exoplanet orbiting a star comparable to our Sun.
Planetary characteristics
Designated NGTS‑39 b, the object has a radius comparable to Jupiter’s. Its equilibrium temperature, derived from the stellar irradiation balance, is roughly 519 K, classifying it as a relatively warm gas giant.
Detection method and publication
The planet was identified through transit observations, where periodic dips in the host star’s brightness reveal the planet’s passage across the stellar disc. The findings were posted on the arXiv preprint server on 2 July.
Implications for exoplanet science
This addition to the catalog of Jupiter‑size planets on close orbits around sun‑like stars provides valuable constraints for formation and migration models of massive gas giants.
Future prospects
