The James Webb Space Telescope has released one of its largest publicly available images of the nearby star‑forming region IC 348. The view shows a crowded field of young stars embedded in natal gas and dust, glowing brightly in infrared wavelengths.
Using Webb’s exquisite sensitivity in the near‑ and mid‑infrared, astronomers searched IC 348 for brown dwarfs—objects that are more massive than planets but not heavy enough to sustain hydrogen fusion.
The survey uncovered brown dwarfs with roughly twice the mass of Jupiter, pushing the known mass limit for such objects to lower values than before.
These findings broaden the understood mass range of brown dwarfs and provide fresh insights into how they form and evolve within young stellar clusters.
