Natural sugar formation beyond our planet
A research team has identified compounds in the interstellar medium that are chemically related to the scent of raspberries. These are sugar molecules that must have formed under space conditions without any biological activity.
- Detection of sugar molecules in interstellar space
- Possible link to the origin of organic life
- Support for the theory of natural molecule formation
The observation suggests that fundamental organic substances do not need to arise on planetary surfaces. Instead, they may be produced in cold, diffuse gas clouds between stars before later becoming incorporated into young solar systems.
According to the scientists, the study shows that sugars can be generated in a completely natural way in space. This reinforces the idea that the chemical precursors of life are more widespread in the universe than previously thought.
The results could complement future analyses of comets and meteorites, where complex organic materials have also been found. They open new avenues for understanding the early chemistry of the cosmos and the origins of life on Earth.
