Boeing awarded contract for next‑generation military satellites
The U.S. Space Force has selected Boeing to design, build, and deliver two advanced communications satellites, with the contract valued at up to $2 billion. The award follows a competitive procurement process that also included a bid from Lockheed Martin.
The satellites are intended to upgrade the Force’s existing communications architecture, offering higher data throughput and enhanced resilience against electronic interference. Boeing will manage the program from concept development through launch and on‑orbit operations, working closely with the Department of Defense.
The contract was announced from Washington, where Pentagon officials highlighted the strategic importance of robust space‑based communications for global military operations. Production is expected to take place at Boeing’s established aerospace facilities.
Lockheed Martin, a long‑time supplier of military space systems, was not selected in this round. Boeing views the win as a significant step in consolidating its role in the defense space market.
Launch schedules for the two satellites will be set in the coming years, contingent on the availability of suitable launch vehicles. The Space Force plans to integrate the new assets into its existing network to improve worldwide communication capabilities for U.S. forces.
