Distinct Chemistry in a Binary System
A research team employed high‑resolution spectroscopy to compare the elemental composition of two closely orbiting stars. Although both stars should have formed from the same molecular cloud, the study uncovered substantial differences in lithium, beryllium and heavier metal abundances.
One of the stars displays a noticeably lower concentration of light elements, a pattern consistent with the ingestion of material from an Earth‑like body. Such anomalies are expected when a planet spirals inward and is ultimately engulfed by its host star.
Evidence for Planetary Ingestion
The investigators matched their measurements against models predicting how stellar spectra change when planetary debris is mixed into the stellar envelope. The observed lithium depletion and slight enrichment of heavy metals align with these predictions.
This finding provides a new method for detecting planets that no longer exist as independent objects because they have been consumed by their star.
Implications for Exoplanet Studies
Only a handful of stars have previously shown clear signatures of planetary consumption. The new result suggests that such events may be more common than assumed and could play a significant role in the evolution of planetary systems.
