On September 8, 2004, NASA’s Genesis spacecraft returned from a mission to collect solar wind particles and crashed in the Utah desert when its parachutes did not deploy.
The goal of Genesis was to capture pristine samples of the Sun’s outflow and bring them to Earth for laboratory analysis. The spacecraft carried ultra‑clean collector arrays designed to trap ions from the solar wind.
During re‑entry, a series of parachutes were supposed to slow the capsule for a soft landing. A sensor malfunction prevented the parachutes from firing, causing the capsule to strike the ground at high speed and shatter the collector hardware.
Despite the violent impact, researchers were able to recover fragments of the collectors and obtain meaningful data about the solar wind’s composition. The accident prompted a review of parachute design and contributed to improvements in future sample‑return missions.
