Europe's Mars Express spacecraft, operating in orbit around the Red Planet, has returned high‑resolution images of a sprawling valley system located in the planet's southern highlands. The terrain features a mix of narrow ravines and broad basins extending over several hundred kilometres.
Dust Devils as Distinct Features
Approximately thirty individual dust devils are visible in the captured frames. These small‑scale vortices stand out against the dark surface, creating spiral patterns that are subtle to the naked eye but clearly discernible in the detailed photographs.
Implications for Martian Science
Dust devils are valuable indicators of local atmospheric conditions, providing insight into wind patterns and thermal gradients near the surface. The concentration of such vortices within a single valley offers fresh data for refining atmospheric circulation models of Mars.
Future Work
The European Space Agency intends to combine these observations with data from other missions, such as NASA's Perseverance rover, to deepen understanding of dust‑devil formation and assess any potential impact on upcoming surface missions.
