Unusual Path Deviation Led to Identification
Objects moving through the solar system normally follow predictable routes, and any deviation prompts scientists to search for a cause. In a recent instance, a body previously categorized as an asteroid displayed a shift in its orbit that gravitational forces alone could not account for.
Closer examination showed that the object was not a standard asteroid. It has instead been reclassified as a dark comet. These bodies differ from conventional comets by lacking the prominent dust and gas tails usually associated with such objects.
How Comets Become Visible
Astronomers generally detect comets through a surrounding haze known as a coma and through tails. Such features form when solar heat causes the ice within a comet to vaporize. The released material scatters sunlight, producing a glow from dust and water particles.
The escape of gas from a comet's interior also produces a physical consequence. As the gas leaves the body, it functions like a minute thruster and gently alters the object's course. This mechanism provided the clue to the true identity of the puzzling body, since the observed orbital adjustment occurred without any visible coma or tail.
