The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, operating for over a decade as a rapid‑response space telescope for gamma‑ray bursts and other transient events, is gradually losing altitude. Without intervention, the spacecraft will exit its functional orbit within the next few years.
Proposed Rescue Mission
NASA is developing a novel mission scheduled for this summer, in which a dedicated spacecraft will launch from Earth, rendezvous with Swift, dock, and use its propulsion system to lift Swift into a higher orbit. This would be the first instance of an active boost for an already‑deployed observatory.
Technical Approach
The servicing vehicle will be placed into low‑Earth orbit via a launch vehicle. After launch, it will perform an autonomous rendezvous followed by docking with Swift. A propulsion burn will then raise Swift’s orbit to a more stable, higher altitude, thereby extending the observatory’s service life by several years.
