Mission background
The Swift observatory, operating since 2004, has been gradually losing altitude due to atmospheric drag at its low Earth orbit. Without intervention, the spacecraft is expected to re‑enter Earth’s atmosphere within the next few years.
Swift Boost concept and budget
A dedicated service module, dubbed “Swift Boost,” was launched on 27 June to lift Swift into a higher orbit and extend its operational life by several years. The project, including development, launch and operations, is budgeted at approximately US$30 million.
Technical implementation
The module uses an electric propulsion system to provide a gentle yet precise orbital maneuver. After rendezvousing and docking with the 22‑year‑old satellite, the module will increase Swift’s velocity, moving it out of the denser parts of the atmosphere into a stable orbit.
Risks and benefits
Technical challenges include docking with an aging spacecraft not originally designed for such servicing. However, extending Swift’s mission will continue to yield valuable data on gamma‑ray bursts, X‑ray flares and other transient phenomena critical to astrophysics.
Future implications
If successful, Swift Boost could become a template for future on‑orbit servicing missions, preserving costly scientific assets rather than replacing them.
