Measurements in Jezero Crater
The Perseverance rover examined two mudstone outcrops within Jezero Crater and detected hundreds of organic signals. The analyses were performed with the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite and the Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals (SHERLOC) instrument, both designed to identify complex carbon‑based molecules.
Implications of the Organic Findings
The detected organics include a variety of hydrocarbons that are often associated with biological processes. Researchers caution that, while the presence of organic material is confirmed, the data alone cannot prove past life; they simply demonstrate that carbon‑rich compounds have persisted in the Martian geological record.
Comparison to Earlier Discoveries
Previous Mars missions, such as Curiosity and earlier Perseverance analyses, have also identified organic compounds, but in smaller quantities and with lower statistical confidence. The current dataset is considered the most robust detection of organics in Jezero Crater because it is based on multiple measurements from two distinct rock samples.
Future Work
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory plans to collect additional samples from nearby formations to map the spatial distribution of organics. Ultimately, the collected material is slated for return to Earth on the upcoming Mars Sample Return mission, where it will undergo more detailed laboratory analyses.
