New Leadership at Caltech
Renowned astrophysicist Ray Jayawardhana officially began his tenure today as the tenth president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The appointment, announced on January 6, also includes the Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and a professorship in astronomy.
Background and Credentials
Jayawardhana’s research focuses on planet formation and the characteristics of exoplanets, and he brings over two decades of experience in fundamental research and program leadership. Prior to joining Caltech, he served as director of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaiʻi and has overseen numerous international collaborations.
Transition and Outlook
Thomas Rosenbaum, who has led the institute since 2014, steps down after nearly a decade. During his tenure Caltech saw significant growth in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and space science. In his inaugural address, Jayawardhana highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and the cultivation of emerging talent.
Future Strategy
The new president intends to expand existing partnerships with space agencies and private industry while reinforcing basic research in astronomy and astrophysics. A key priority will be the development of new observatories and participation in international missions to deepen humanity’s understanding of the cosmos.
