Launch of the MRV‑MEP Mission
On July 21 a Falcon‑9 launch vehicle from SpaceX lifted off from Cape Canaveral and placed Northrop Grumman’s MRV‑MEP mission into low Earth orbit.
The payload consists of a satellite‑repair drone equipped with two ten‑foot robotic arms.
These arms allow the spacecraft to dock with defective satellites, replace components, or refill propellant.
Northrop Grumman describes MRV‑MEP as a first step toward a reusable on‑orbit service fleet for space infrastructure.
The launch was streamed live, showing the successful deployment of the drone after stage cutoff.
Analysts consider such missions key to extending the lifespans of costly spacecraft and reducing orbital debris.
